About

Mission, Vision, & Core Values

High-quality, equitable learning experiences in every classroom, every day, for every student.

Mission Statement

At Public School 83, our mission is to provide all students with the highest quality education through high expectations, rigorous instruction, and an inclusive, culturally responsive curriculum.

Grounded in the principles of NYC Reads and NYC Solves, we are committed to ensuring that all students develop strong literacy, mathematical reasoning, and problem-solving skills through evidence based practices.

We engage every student in critical thinking, cultural awareness, and social-emotional growth within a safe, equitable, and respectful environment that reflects our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) frameworks.

We strive to:

  • Empower families as partners in the learning process
  • Collaborate to align curriculum, instruction, and goals to data-driven priorities
  • Know our students and their families well to personalize support
  • Provide consistent, equitable structures that meet academic, social-emotional, and behavioral needs
  • Nurture the mind, body, and soul of every child so they thrive in all aspects of development

Vision Statement

Public School 83 guarantees high-quality, equitable learning experiences in every classroom, every day, for every student. We envision a school community where NYC Reads and NYC Solves drive instructional excellence, MTSS ensures targeted and responsive supports, and PBIS fosters a positive, inclusive school culture — so that all students succeed as confident, capable, and compassionate learners prepared for their future and to become socially responsible agents of change.

Core Beliefs and Commitments

Children Come First

At Public School 83, we believe that all children can learn and succeed when provided with the appropriate support, resources, and opportunities. Our social-emotional learning (SEL) practices and curriculum are intentionally designed to acknowledge and embrace differences, promote equity, and ensure that every child feels seen, heard, and valued.

Classrooms Are Central

We recognize that classrooms are the most powerful and essential spaces for student learning and growth. Teachers are at the heart of this work and deserve access to high-quality training, resources, and ongoing support to create inclusive, engaging, and rigorous learning environments where all students can thrive.

Leadership and Accountability

We believe that effective leadership at every level is key to advancing student achievement. All school and district leaders are accountable for ensuring that instructional practices, supports, and decisions lead to meaningful progress for every student. Leadership is shared and collaborative, with a focus on continuous improvement.

Community School District 4 Supports Achievement

Our school benefits from the guidance, structures, and collaboration provided by Community School District 4, which ensures consistency in curriculum, assessments, professional development, and overall instructional quality. We believe that all stakeholders — families, staff, students, and community partners — share responsibility for our collective success.

Additional Beliefs

  • Learning flourishes in environments that are safe, supportive, inclusive, and engaging.
  • Education is a partnership among the home, school, and broader community.
  • We must always maintain high expectations for all students, supported by a consistent and coherent approach to curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

Core Values

Equity

At Public School 83, equity means more than treating all students the same — it means meeting each student where they are and providing the personalized supports they need to succeed. Every student has access to high-quality teaching, appropriate resources, inclusive curriculum, and meaningful learning opportunities that reflect and honor their strengths, needs, and identities. We are committed to removing barriers, addressing gaps, and ensuring that all students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Excellence

We believe that excellence is not reserved for a few — it is the standard for all. Public School 83 pursues high academic expectations and rigorous instruction that cultivates critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. Our vision of excellence also includes developing students' social-emotional competencies, civic responsibility, and career-readiness skills, ensuring they are well-prepared for success in an ever-changing world.

Community Engagement

We know that schools flourish when families, students, staff, and community partners work together as active stakeholders. At Public School 83, we foster authentic, two-way partnerships that invite families and community members to help shape school priorities, programs, and goals. We are committed to creating inclusive spaces where all voices are heard, valued, and reflected in our decisions and actions.
