Our story begins

P.S. 83 gives a rigorous, caring education rooted in the proud heritage of East Harlem. With deeply invested teachers, a Mount Sinai School-Based Health Center right in our building, and a support system that catches every child, learning here feels like home. We serve students from 3K through Grade 5 — holding each one to high expectations while surrounding them with real support.

What we're proud of

Our students shine on the New York State tests — well above the city and state averages. The best part is how they get there: together.

The name we carry

The poet we're named for

Luis Muñoz Rivera grew up to be a poet, a journalist, and a leader. He founded the newspaper La Democracia so the people of his community would always have a voice. Our school carries his name — and like him, we believe every child has a story worth telling, and the words to tell it.

A note from our principal

At P.S. 83, we don't just teach children — we believe in them. Every student who walks through our doors is met with high expectations, real support, and a community that wants to see them thrive. We are so proud of what our students accomplish every day, and we would love for your family to be part of our story.

Our Health Center

We are one of the few elementary schools in East Harlem with a Mount Sinai School-Based Health Center right inside our building. Students can see a doctor or talk to someone about how they feel during the school day — at no cost to families.

The Ladder of Support

Every child at P.S. 83 is seen. Our Ladder of Support means that whether a student needs a challenge or a helping hand, the right support is found early and given quickly — one rung at a time.

What families say

My son has flourished academically, reading and writing far above his grade level. He loves his teachers, and they have built lasting relationships with him.

A P.S. 83 Parent

PS 83 changed my daughter's relationship with learning. The teachers don't just teach — they invest. She went from struggling with reading in 2nd grade to winning a writing award in 4th.
