poet · journalist · 1859–1916
The name we carry
Luis Muñoz Rivera grew up to be a poet, a journalist, and a leader. He founded the newspaper La Democracia so the people of his community would always have a voice. Our school carries his name — and like him, we believe every child has a story worth telling, and the words to tell it.
At P.S. 83, we don't just teach children — we believe in them. Every student who walks through our doors is met with high expectations, real support, and a community that wants to see them thrive. We are so proud of what our students accomplish every day, and we would love for your family to be part of our story.
We are one of the few elementary schools in East Harlem with a Mount Sinai School-Based Health Center right inside our building. Students can see a doctor or talk to someone about how they feel during the school day — at no cost to families.
